That Gentle Christmas

And on that gentle Christmas

There was a woman with four smiling faces

beaming up at her with eyes of Innocence,

constant giggles and untidy laces

They called her ‘Ma-di-ma’ because she cradled them at night

when the heat ran low and the chill crept in

and there was only a little light.

And on that gentle Christmas

They looked out upon the snow

and waited at their seats by the little front window

For a father laden with gifts they hoped would soon appear

With big warm hugs

that surely would bring Ma-di-ma just a little cheer.

Yet on that gentle Christmas

With a poor hat in hand Ma-di-ma wandered out to the street

with her old coat and the simplest of shoes on her feet.

“Would it be too much trouble sir . .  . I mean I hate to ask . .

But the world has been so very difficult . . . everything such a very hard task.”

And on that gentle Christmas

There were lights glistening from afar

where the purest Happiness lay.

And where the Spirit of Hopes and Dreams had been born

on that Truly Wondrous Day.

And on that gentle Christmas

The Community of the Spirit stopped

for just a single, solitary, moment in Time.

For they had found one woman stranded ‘tween Heaven and Earth

with neither nickel, nor quarter, nor penny, nor dime.

And on that gentle Christmas

As four smiling faces gathered ‘round her waist

the Community filled her hat to overflowing

and held Ma-di-ma’s hands in Sweetness and in Grace.

As her Laughter burst forth in tears of Happiness and Joy

The Spirit touched her lightly with the Glow from a tiny infant Boy

On that very gentle Christmas.
